Class #1 - January 7/10

I am not even sure if this is the right place to post my thoughts. I'll see. Bear with me!!

I'm not entirely sure if this is to be an educated reflection of the class or an essay or just my thoughts, so for today I will just post some thoughts I've had about the readings.

The first one I read was the Opening Speech document. In regard to the question of "what is he saying?" I would have to believe that this document is a critique of MacLaren's video and that Professor Hlynka is suggesting that it is still relevant to today, just with different technology. The metaphor of the video is still relevant in the sense that technology still gives us grief and frustration when it doesn't work, we still continue to find ways to present our message using some form of technology and it does tend to have a mind of its own sometimes. The fact that people are still scared to use technology due to the fact that it can be problematic is still true today. Also, the multiple languages that the message is in is still existant, although we may include more or different ones is still an issue. So, the critique of the video is just a reminder of how current it still is today.

Secondly, I read the definitions document. A couple of questions came to my mind: If ICT is not a great name to call Information and Communication Technology, then what shall we call it? Secondly, I am having difficulty understanding the reference to the Communication Over Time and Communication Over Distance. Lastly, I think that saying "a fast-paced society is not necessarily a thinking society" is a hard statement to swallow, the reason being that a fast-paced society is exactly where this world is headed, so we better hope to be a thinking society!!!
